Reflecting
Whenever I had an important event on the horizon I would always
seek reassurance in the fact that all will be just fine when I
would reflect back on all of my preparation. It brought me peace
and contentment for more often than not my preparation would
have been fine.
I
recently read a few lines on the Net from Rod Dixon. Rod is a
New Zealander, fantastic runner and along with being an Olympic
medalist, he also won the New York Marathon in 1982.
Rod
stated that he had isolated himself in a training camp for a
number of months prior to New York and just trained like he had
never done before.
He
stated that as he departed his training base for the New York
Marathon he flew over the forest where he had run so many miles.
As he glanced down at the forest he knew he had prepared well.
Rod
described his pre race state of mind the same as I always
strived to achieve for he went on to mention that looking down
at that forest brought with it a total sense of peace and
contentment.
Look
back on your training diary or think of how many times you
ventured out that door for your Sunday long run.
I
always used the sunrise and sunset as a time to reflect. Just
taking in the sheer beauty and combining this with some soul
searching, reflecting back on my preparation and also what I
wanted to of achieved as I crossed that line.
