GOLD COAST AIRPORT MARATHON
Through the eyes of Peter Grant
I wanted to
take the time to share with you my story with regards to the
Gold Coast Marathon.
If you will
indulge me I would like to give you a little back ground on
myself. I was very competitive junior surf lifesaver and
triathlete through my late teens tipping the scales at around
80kg, until I gave it away aged 20 and went to uni.
"I drank too much beer, partied too hard."
I drank too
much beer, partied too hard, and over a six year period I
reached a weight of 124.3kg (I'm 5 foot 8 tall) in August 2000.
Throughout this period the only sport I did was rugby union with
my position evolving from winger to prop over these six years.
For the last two of these six years I dropped out of surf life
saving altogether. I decided something had to change.

I managed to
find a surfboat sweep who would take me on in November 2000, I
think he was as desperate for rowers as I was for a crew to row
in. Over the next two years until September 2002 I managed to
get my weight down to around 100kg by the end of each surf life
saving season in March only to start the next season again at
around 110kgs.
Something was not right
During this
period I was also focusing on developing my career which was
coming along very well. My life was still very out of balance
though.
In September
2002 I was transferred to Melbourne and lined up competing in
surfboats for Torquay. In March of 2003 I got down to 98kg and
made the state title final. I started to do a few fun runs in
April 2003. My boat crew for Summer 03/04 fell apart.
