Southern Cross University 10km Run

PatFranks

PAT FRANKS

10k Pace time: 40min

Personal Bests: 5k – 16:58/ 10k – 35:49/ Half – 1:18:26/ Full – 2:49:13

Favourite song: Daft Punk – One More Time

Dream dinner partner: My wife Cass. Let’s be honest, I’d be in trouble if I said anyone else!

What motivates you to run? The running community is what motivates me to run. I’ve met so many inspiring people through the running community and continue to do so on a regular basis. That and of course the post run coffee.

Tips for race morning: Don’t try anything new! If you haven’t practiced it during training then forget it. This is especially true for nutrition – it is vitally important to have nailed down your nutrition a few weeks out from race day. A good idea is to find out what products will be provided on course and use those during training.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I always keep my eyes on the prize and remember how much hard work I’ve put into training. You only get 1 crack on race day, don’t let that slip away in a moment of temporary weakness.

What motivates you to run? My kids, to hopefully teach them to dream big and achieve, put your mind and heart into something and anything is possible!

Tips for race morning: Stay Relaxed, have faith in yourself that all the hard work has been done now its time for reward. Smile, smile and smile and always remember that last loo stop before heading to the start line.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I think of my kids and all the people that are unable to run for reasons out of their control like illness. Its only pain and pain is temporary memories are forever! Give it everything!

Favourite song: “Wake me up” by Avicii

Dream dinner partner: Too easy….  ”Jennifer Aniston” without question!

What motivates you to run? To meet new people, clear my head and it is a massive key to help tackle my depression and anxiety.

Tips for race morning: Just relax, what will be will be, You’ve done all the hard work the rest (the race) is just the victory lap.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I know that when I’m really hurting that it’s not going to last for long, keep positive and keep pushing as if you don’t, you’ll only regret it later!

j200

JARROD GIBSON

10k Pace time: 60min

Personal Bests: 37.00

Favourite song: Stairway to Heaven

Dream dinner partner: Sylvester Stallone & Atticus Finch

What motivates you to run? The memories of being 30 Kg overweight and struggling to walk uphill/upstairs, and now knowing the thrill of being one with nature while running.

Tips for race morning: Don’t deviate too much from what you have done for long training runs, except to allow yourself extra time.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough?    I remind myself that there are millions of other people who would love to be able to experience the thrills of running and achieving, and that what I will achieve if I keep going, will be a part of me forever. Every run could be my last.

REGAN BAUKHORN

10k Pace time: 60min

Personal Bests: 10km = 47.40 21.1km = 1 hr 40.00 42.2km = 3 hr 44.23

Favourite song: I really love Vanessa Da Mata’s ‘Boa Sorte’ and Thievery Corporation’s ‘Exilio’. Though who doesn’t want to dance or run faster when they hear Daft punk.

What motivates you to run? A beautiful clear sunny morning just after sunrise (best light and colours of the day), and a good upbeat song motivates me on further E.g. ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’ – Daft Punk.

Tips for race morning:Have your running gear and racekit set out the night before.  Leave yourself enough time for travel, finding parking, a nervous prerace bathroom stop, finding your start zone (remember there will be crowds to get through), warming up and setting your GPS watch.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? If it is really tough I say to myself ‘just don’t stop and walk’, because if I stop it is too hard to start again. Otherwise, I will keep looking for landmarks up ahead and tell myself to run to there and then there etc.; and dedicate each distance to someone I care about E.g. ‘This section is for…’

Diet: Hopefully you’ve had a great preparation and had an opportunity to trial your pre race & during race nutrition and hydration requirements. If it ain’t broke don’t try and fix it.
Head space: Chill! Don’t think about the race however you should have an underlying awareness that there is no tomorrow – TODAY is your opportunity to make it happen. Envisage yourself post race feeling 100% ok with your performance.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? Remind myself about all the training I banked. I would try to relax as much as I could and say “relax” (a mantra) whilst still very much staying in the zone. The business end of the race is about combating fatigue and continuing on when your weaker side try’s to take over. Tough patches can come and go. Work through them and chances are you’ll be feeling better 10min down the road. Visualize your prize – the finish line!

What motivates you to run? I started running to  improve my health but now I mostly run to provide employment to the health industry: physios, massage therapists, personal trainers, etc. Seriously, I love the relaxation that a solo run brings and the joy of running with friends.

Tips for race morning: While it’s important not to run too fast at the start and keep your nutrition the same, the most important thing is to know where the photographers are on the course. Remember to smile at the camera, you want your race photos to look good! Also, thank the volunteers and be nice to your pacer!

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? Try counting your breaths and put yourself in a meditative state to ease yourself through the race. Alternatively, get a nemesis. You know that friend of a friend who just beat you last year? Well, write their name and race time on your bedroom ceiling and you’ll never lack any motivation!

KATIE MACKENZIE

Half Marathon Pace time: 2hrs 20min

Personal Bests: 10km 39:45/ 21.1km 1:28:45/ 42.2km 3:20:57

Favourite song: “Like I Love You” – Justin Timberlake, pretty much any JT song actually…

Dream dinner partner: Easy – Justin Timberlake! He seems to have plenty of connections, so he could bring a friend or two. Pharrell, Jay Z, Rhianna….they’re all welcome. Just let me know when!

What motivates you to run? Getting outside, before the rest of the world, on my own or with my running buddies is the best part of my day. I rarely need to push myself go. When it’s really cold, the sense of adventure still gets me out there. If it is a really early start, I’ll usually arrange a meet up with a buddy, to ensure we stay accountable and keep each other company in the dark!

Tips for race morning: Get there early. I usually run part of the way there to warm up. It’s nice to have a bit of alone time before you see all your buddies, so you can reflect on the prep you’ve done. Then when you arrive in the race precinct, just take a deep breath and look around. Soak it all up. Meet your crew, share your goals and pump each other up! You’ve all worked hard and this is THE THING you’ve been working towards. Enjoy!

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I just focus on my goals. Chunk the race down, and just concentrate on the next 5km, even the next 1km.  When you reach each goal / km marker, have a look around. We are all running the same race, all aiming for that finish line. We are all in this together, so use the support of the crowd and other competitors to carry you further. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon course is also particularly scenic, so there’s plenty to distract you from the suffering.

Tips for race morning: I would suggest a pre-race jog of around 2 to 3 km and do not dress with too much gear to keep warm.  Maybe some arm warmers as well as usual running clothes.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I would start chatting to some of the other nearby runners and the kms will just disappear.  However, if one is running flat chat that might be a bit difficult, so just slow a bit for a few kms.

BRUCE HARGREAVES

Marathon Pace time: 4hrs 15min

The 2nd oldest Pacer in the 2016 Gold Coast Marathon, and he has been running for longer than most runners have been alive.

Consequently he has more war stories to bore those in his pacing group than most pacers, and if you are unfortunate enough to join his group, he will tell you them all, and the older he gets, the better his was!
While he was not elite class in his younger day, he certainly was a solid runner, with 3 X  Sub 3-hour runs on the Gold Coast Course including his PB of 2-47-02, and GC2016 will be his 140th journey over a 42.195km course, which includes 16 previous GCM finishes, along side his 10 Gold Coast Half finishes.
GC2016 will also be Diggers 28th ‘pacing gig’ over 42km, and you may have spotted him parked under pacing balloons at al of the major Marathons on the East Coast of Australia, as well as New York, Mumbai (X2), Rotorua and Auckland, yes he has bored other runners across the Planet.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? Relax,  focus on my breathing and form…stay right in the moment.

STEVEN HOUGHTON

Marathon Pace time: 4hrs 30min

Personal Bests: 3:15

Favourite song: Rocky theme song – Eye of the tiger

Dream dinner partner: The Queensland State of Origin Team, but I wouldn’t know who I would like to talk to first, but it would be allot of fun.

What motivates you to run? To challenge myself, to push myself outside of my comfort zone, to keep fit and enjoy life.

Tips for race morning: Do try anything new on race day, wear cloths and shoes which you have trained in, practice your nutrition, pace yourself, enjoy the race and try to have some fun along the way.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I tell myself that ‘If I keep going at my race pace I will be finished sooner and if I slow down I will have to endure the conditions longer’.  When I have 10kms to go, I think of the run as one of training runs.  When I have 5kms to go, I think of the run as same distance as the  ParkRun and that doesn’t seem too long at all.

Peter Large

PETER LARGE

Marathon Pace time: 4hrs 45min

What motivates you to run? Keeping fit, camaraderie, feeling of wellbeing.  It’s just part of my life now.

Tips for race morning: Get to the venue with plenty of time to spare.  Relish the challenge!  If you have trained well, you have nothing to worry about.  One more thing…don’t start too quickly!

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I remind myself that I expect the Marathon to be tough but I have been down this road before and have come out OK at the other end.  I know if I can push through the tough bits, it will add immeasurably to the emotional high at the end of the race.  It is a mental game.

TOM LUXTON

Marathon Pace time: 4hrs 45min

Personal Bests: 3:34

Favourite song: “Run On” (Johnny Cash)

Dream dinner partner: Will Smith, he’s brilliant.

What motivates you to run?
I love the the physical and mental challenge, testing limits with long distances like the marathon and ultra racing.  There’s no better feeling than working hard for something and seeing it through to the finish.

Tips for race morning: Get in nice and early, relax and soak in the atmosphere.  There’s few places to run a marathon as spectacular as the Gold Coast, the sunrise pre-race is always special.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? There’s plenty points in the marathon when your faced with the option of slowing down or stopping. Keep your mind on the end goal and set smaller targets along the way.  Before a race, I also write words on my forearm as a reminder when things get tough.

IAN FABIAN

Dream dinner partner: Jesus. There should be an endless supply of loaves and fishes and wine, plus he can use his healing powers on my aching bones.

What motivates you to run? A work colleague recently told me that I’m totally prepared for when the zombie apocalypse happens. I’ve been too afraid to stop training ever since.

Tips for race morning: Set at least two alarms and don’t touch the snooze button. Wear something warm to the race start that you can throw away just before the starting gun fires.

How do you motivate yourself to reach within when the going get’s tough? I often go through a phase where I tell myself this will be the last marathon/trail run/triathlon ever, and just push through with that in mind.  I’ve had more comebacks than Rocky Balboa.
