I want to tell you about how
much this year of running has meant to me, and how much you have
played a part in that.
Notwithstanding I had extremely limited time for running this
year, I stuck to the program you set for me. I raced three times
and each time I did course and distance PBs. And not just PBs by
a few seconds. The first was the 8km Mother’s Day race I did
29.09 – a PB by about 1 minute 25. The next was the SMH half. I
did 82.22 which was a PB by 1 minute 40 odd. And then the GC
Marathon. I did 2.57 which was a PB by about 8 minutes (more on
that later).
Pat running under your guidance has been the best thing that has
happened for my running. I have absolute faith in the regimes
you set me. The feedback you give me is constructive, to the
point and unfalteringly accurate.
But I want to tell you about how running with you at the GC was,
without question, the highlight of my years of running.
Running
with you was an absolute privilege and honour. The support and
encouragement (and firm words when I absolutely needed them) you
gave me throughout the race, and the many other runners, was an
experience that I find difficult to put into words.

But I can say these things. Each and every time I have run since
that GCM I have thought about it and felt the feelings that I
had in and during that day. And each time I run I think about
what an incredible experience it was. And, although I was
running for a time, somewhat strangely, that is not what I think
about when I reflect on the day. Rather I think about the 3
hour group; the support you gave all the runners in the group;
the support you gave me; the finishing line; you talking me
through the last 3-5kms; you telling me, near the end, that if I
put in a bit of a spurt that I could get a 2.56 (and me
thinking, at the time, mate I am over the moon with a 2.57 –
that will do me fine!).
And you know what? After all these years of running it has given
me a new lease of life in my running which I find remarkable.
I put the experience on the top shelf of my life’s events. And
you are the person who made it happen for me!

Congratulations Nicholas!

I am a definite starter on 2 July 2006
at the GC Marathon.
