Anna Bligh is inviting you to join her on Sunday
morning at a community rally to raise public
awareness and demonstrate public determination to
use our public pathways.
Here is an important message from our Acting Premier: Hi fellow PCRGers, as runners we all use the wonderful network of pathways in and around Brisbane city on an almost daily basis – and if you’re like me you’re out there because you feel safe. No doubt you are aware by now that a series of attacks have occurred on women walkers and runners on Brisbane’s northside over the past year – these attacks are not only terrible for the women who have experienced them – they threaten a lifestyle that we have all taken for granted for a long time. Police believe that public support will make a real difference to their investigations. The Courier-Mail has today announced a community rally to be held this Sunday to raise public awareness and demonstrate public determination to use our public pathways. I will be attending but I thought other PCRG members might be interested in coming along as a group in our (very stylish!!) PCRG gear maybe after or as part of your Sunday run – I understand that Sunday is an important rest/family/friends/day and that many people will already have plans, but even a small group may help to highlight that there are running groups available for people who don’t have running buddies and clearly indicate strong support for safe public pathways.
Obviously in my position, I have public
responsibilities in relation to this issue – however, I’m
writing to you today as a runner who feels very
angry that other runners are being attacked while
they are exercising and vulnerable. Of course we
should all take commonsense precautions when we
venture out in the morning or evening, but our paths
and bikeways should be safe and welcoming places.
If you are interested in coming along please let Pat
know by email (thankyou Pat for your support for this
and for being a letterbox!) or talk to me at group on
Thursday morning (this means of course that I will
have to come on Thursday!!!) Thanks for reading
this – let me know your thoughts.
Anna will be joining me in the morning and I hope to see YOU @ the Ship Inn at 5.40am also. Cheers Pat P.S. The BRG'S 3K Challenge is on Feb 16 (it's a Friday night) @ 6pm. I would greatly appreciate a strong showing from PCRG members. Details here.
