Pat, Australia's premier running festival 'The Gold Coast Airport Marathon' will take place this Sunday - July 1. If you are involved in the 10k/ Half Marathon or Marathon I would like to sincerely wish you all the best and I hope you achieve your goal. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is clearly my favourite event. I ran my debut Marathon on the Coast in 82 and was fortunate enough to eventually win the Marathon four times. This year my Brisbane running group (PCRG) has chosen Childhood Cancer Support as our nominated Gold Coast Airport Marathon charity. One of the methods we are using to raise funds is via group members being sponsored to run in their event. I will be running in the Half Marathon on Sunday and invite you to sponsor me.

In 1992 when my 12 month old son, Matthew Patrick, was diagnosed with a rare liver tumour, our lives turned completely upside down & inside out. My husband & I quit our jobs & with our 4 year old son Ben, began a 12 month journey of dangerous operations, chemo, constant appointments, sleeping on hospital floors for 24-48 hours at a time, living with no income & facing new disappointments every day. At the same time we were trying our best to keep a 'normal' life for Ben who had just started his first year at kindergarten. It was at this time that I was introduced to CLCS now known as CCS (Childhood Cancer Support). They offered us invaluable support, understanding & information. We lived 10 minutes from the hospital but our lives still became chaotic with no routine. It was at CCS that I met the families that CCS helped. Families facing the same life changing events but unlike us, they were many many kilometers from home & support. CCS offers families not only a place to 'stay' out of hospital grounds but offers invaluable support & creates a small community away from home that understands. Our little "Matty Patty" passed away 11 years ago but sadly there continues to be many more little children diagnosed with cancer & many from areas outside of Brisbane. Necessary medical care takes these children away from their homes, schools & communities. Funds raised during this years PCRG Gold Coast campaign will help CCS to continue providing the much needed accommodation and support for the families dealing with childhood cancer.
