Pat, I am often asked what length of time is required in order to prepare for a 10k/Half Marathon or Marathon. My response is always the same, "You can never start soon enough". It's not the hours/weeks or months that make the difference - consistent training over many years designed to hone speed and improve endurance will return the greatest reward. It takes an elite Marathoner the best part of 10 years (52 weeks/year - 14 sessions/week) before a peak in ability is achieved. Weekend Warriors: Family and Career are the main focus and a 10-15 year involvement in distance running may be a bonus if it happens but understandably it's far from a major focus. There is no denying though that a gradual 6 month preparation will reap a greater reward than a much shorter one. The 2009 Gold Coast Airport Marathon (July 5) consists of a 10k/Half Marathon and Marathon. I can set you a personalised training program and you will have the ability to converse with me via email as often as you wish. My standard 24 week fee kicks in on Jan 19 2009. We can get a head start though. Sign Up anytime between now and Jan 19 for Gold Coast 2009 and only pay the 24 week fee. On Thursday I received a framed photo of myself winning the 1997 Gold Coast Airport Marathon. The framed photo was discovered at a garage sale - purchase price - $2.00. Vouchers are valid for 12 months and the recipient can initiate online coaching at anytime during the 12 month period.
