PC: Were you aware that your pace was dropping over the final 5 kilometres?

LT: You bet I was.

PC: Can you remember exactly when you felt like you really had to start concentrating and working to maintain your pace?

LT: Over the cobblestones at 36km. Up till then I felt great. I felt terrible over them and lost some ground on Baldini. Once we hit the road at 37km I was really concentrating as we had a headwind and it was still raining. I was tired and as each km went by I was getting slower. The last 6 km was so tough.

                        It got real tough

PC: What was this feeling exactly like? Was it like you were running out of steam, legs cramping, nauseas, light headed maybe?

LT: It was a terrible feeling. Everyone dropped 2 mins the last section. I wanted to run 2.07 and did everything in my power to do it. The thing I could not control was the weather so as I was battling into the headwind and dropping in time I kept asking myself how much I wanted this and when things get tough I rise to the occasion etc. I was working twice as hard and slowing. My body did not cramp just was running out of steam and the headwind was making me feel even worse.

PC: At this point when it started to get tough. What did you do to convince yourself to keep going and plough through those closing kilometres? What was going on inside Lee Troops head in the closing stages of the London Marathon?

LT: DONT GIVE UP!! I just kept running hard. All the guys in front were slowing and I could not make up ground. As each km went by I was getting a little disheartened that I might not even run under 2.10. I was hurting and kept pushing. Benoit Z passed me 1km from home, and then I passed John Yuda 500m from home. I turned into the straight with 200m to go and I had nothing left and tried to sprint to break 2hrs 10min. I ran hard for all of the 42.195km!!!!

              "I will always finish ................"

PC: Was there any point in the race where you felt that you might not be able to finish?

LT: Never. I will always finish no matter what the result!
