Countdown to Gold Coast
The
Gold Coast Airport Marathon is an event which started my
running career. I can still remember my first Marathon at Gold
Coast back in 1982. The night before the race I crammed into a
$20 a night one bedroom motel at Broadbeach with my Father and
Brother. The race started at Surfers Paradise back then however
it still managed to utilize the flat Gold Coast coastline that
will be used in the 2005 event.
DEEK
Only as I am
typing this do I recall that Rob De Castella was the guest
speaker at the carbo loading party which I attended. Deek was
riding high on his 2.08.18 win at Fukuoka the year prior and was
in training for the Brisbane ‘82 Commonwealth Games.
It is amazing
how life unfolds for it was only last week that I attended the
2005 (23 years later) Gold Coast Airport Marathon launch with
Rob as special guest (once again) and instead of sitting back in
the audience, as was the case in ‘82, I was socialising with
Rob.
"Success can be managed in many ways"
I have enjoyed
a strong history with the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and was
fortunate enough to have success on many occasions.
I have learnt
that success can be measured in many ways and finishing first
across the line is a very narrow interpretation of what success
really is. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon allows every
individual to achieve success in the 10k, Half Marathon and
Marathon. Through setting yourself and achieving a
challenging yet possible goal you will walk away from
July 3 feeling every bit a winner.
With the weeks ticking
away NOW is the time to start preparing. If you are not living
in the Brisbane area I can guide you by being your
personal
online coach.
The Brisbane group is booming
If you live in
Brisbane I can offer you the full package. I currently have a
core group of 30-40 runners (all levels) in my Brisbane Running
Group and we are about to launch into a “Countdown to Gold
Coast” campaign which will culminate in a formal celebration
dinner two weeks after the race, on July 16.
